Challenges in the Business of Pleasure

Last year I made the mistake of dating a client. We met, clicked, and began seeing each other. We even talked about moving in together; things had gotten serious (This happens more often than you think; many sex workers are in relationships. This can create issues, indeed. More on that in a future article). Of course, he wasn’t at all happy with the idea of me being an escort while we were dating. He pressured me into quitting, yet offered no financial support in return for my loyalty. He didn’t see escorting as “work”; he thought it was taking the easy way out. Suffice to say the relationship ended, and I’m much happier doing my work as an escort, and with my job working for PinkDate.

She means business, guys.

This brings us to an important point: sex work is real work. When we spend time with clients, we are working. Sure, a lot of us have a great time with our clients. But shouldn’t everyone have the ability to enjoy their work? The idea that all of us engage with clients and are secretly miserable, or “wouldn’t be doing this if only”, is wholly untrue. Just because we enjoy our work, doesn’t mean we’re not working when we’re with a client.

We’re also working when we’re not with clients. All that tweeting and online banter? We’re trying to create a following and establish a presence — so we can meet clients and network in our industry. Friendly, yes, but still work. We also handle admin tasks, advertising, marketing, web design, and financial management of our business. Sounds like a lot of work to me.

We accept the risks that come with our work, too, as any business owner does. We’re worried about our bottom line, sure. We want to turn profit, ensure our marketing strategies are working, and attract great, high-value clients. But we also worry about our safety, health, and security. Being an escort is a high-risk profession with many problems.

Yes, there are problems with the sex trade industry. No, it’s not just a matter of call a girl, get paid, get laid. In between there are a whole host of things that need to happen for a date to be successful. Forget Pretty Woman. Forget what you think you know about escorting. Here’s the real deal.

As an escort, I face a risk every day I choose to work. Assault, rape, robbery, being outed, arrest: these are real problems sex workers face around the world every day. On top of that, there’s the daily grind of wondering whether clients will show, hoping they will pay the agreed-upon rate, hoping they’re not time wasters, hoping they won’t push my personal boundaries during a date — the list goes on. That’s why we screen, folks. At the end of the day, we just want to make sure clients are safe, sane, and will pay us. We actually don’t care what you look like, how you perform, or any of that stuff. What we do care about is respect. Respect goes a long way in our world. If you give it, you’ll get it back in spades. We’ll make you feel like a king.

Prior to meeting, all we request is a small piece of information. Your name and a reference are good starting places, but more information is helpful. That said, we don’t want your bank account info, or your Social Security Number, or your credit cards. Your name, maybe where you work, and a reference or two from someone else you’ve seen before, helps provide us some reassurance you’ll be a good date. We understand that you think this is a lot of information. You’re worried we’ll tell-all, go to your work place, run to your wife. Trust us, we’re not interested. Once our date ends, we let it go and move on to the other things we have going on in our daily lives. We’re worried about being hurt or killed.

Clients have their problems, too. We know you don’t want to get busted — by your wife or law enforcement. You want a clean, safe, discreet, and fun experience — with emphasis on the fun! You want to make sure the girl you choose is hot, sexy, sensual, and real. We know you’ve had your share of bad experiences, too; girls who don’t show, or who rip you off, or don’t look like their photos. We feel you.

Wouldn’t it be great if there was a service that could help solve everyone’s problems?
